Opening Sentences for Lent

Behold, now is the acceptable time.

  Now is the day of salvation.

Turn us again, O God of our salvation;

  that the light of your face may shine upon us.

May your justice shine like the sun,

  And may the poor be lifted up.

O Light Whose Splendor Thrills                             ELW 563 (WOV  728)

Thanksgiving for light

The Lord be with you.

  And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

  It is right to give him thanks and praise.

We praise and thank you, O God,

for you are without beginning and without end.

Through Christ you are the creator and preserver of the whole world;

but, above all, you are his God and Father, the giver of the Spirit,

and the ruler of all that is, seen and unseen.

You made the day for the works of light

and the night for the refreshment of our weakness.

O loving Lord and source of all that is good,

mercifully accept our evening sacrifice of praise.

As you have conducted us through the day

and brought us to night's beginning; keep us now in Christ;

grant us a peaceful evening and a night free from sin;

and, at the end, bring us to everlasting life through Christ our Lord.

Through him

we offer glory, honor, and worship to you in the Holy Spirit,

now and always and forever and ever.

  Amen

Psalmody                          Let My Prayer Arise (Ps. 141:1-7)                  ELW 233

Silence for meditation.

Let the incense of our repentant prayer ascend before you, O Lord,

and let your lovingkindness descend upon us;

that with purified minds we may sing your praises

with the Church on earth and the whole heavenly host,

and may glorify you forever and ever.

  Amen

Reading                                                                                     John 19:23-27

23When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it." This was to fulfill what the scripture says,
 "They divided my clothes among themselves,
 and for my clothing they cast lots."
25And that is what the soldiers did.
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, "Woman, here is your son." 27Then he said to the disciple, "Here is your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

The Word of the Lord.

  Thanks be to God.

 Hymn                   Jesus, in thy dying woes

7              Jesus, loving to the end

                her whose heart thy sorrows rend,

                and thy dearest human friend:

                hear us, holy Jesus.

8              May we in thy sorrows share,

                for thy sake all peril dare,

                and enjoy thy tender care:

                hear us, holy Jesus.

9             May we all thy loved ones be,

                all one holy family,

                loving for the love of thee:

                hear us, holy Jesus.

God spoke to his people of old by the prophets.

The prayers are said with the congregation responding ‘Amen’ to each.

The prayers conclude:

O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works: Give to us, your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments, and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness; for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God forever.  Amen

Our Father, who art in heaven,

                                hallowed be thy name,

                                thy kingdom come,

                                thy will be done,

                                                on earth as it is in heaven.

                Give us this day our daily bread;

                and forgive us our trespasses,

                                as we forgive those who trespass against us;
