Evening Prayer, Thursday, July 25, 7 pm: St James the Elder, Apostle

James and his brother John were the sons of Zebedee, fishermen by trade before their call from Jesus. He was the first of the twelve apostles to be martyred, and his death is the only one recorded in scripture (Acts 12:1-2).

Evening Prayer, July 22, 7 pm: St Mary Magdalene

From Our Church Speaks
'According to the Gospels, "the Holy myrrh-bearer and equal of the Apostles, Mary Magdalene," as her title in the Eastern Church describes her, is the primary witness of the fundamental facts of the Christian proclamation: she saw the death of Jesus, she saw his burial, she saw his first resurrection appearance... Her witness contrasts to that of the apostles, who, at Jesus' crucifixion "all deserted him and fled" (Matt 26:56). Mary of Magdala, remarkable for her devotion and courage, was praised by Eaton Stannard Barrett (1786-1820) in her poem Woman (Part 1, lines 143-44),

'She, while Apostles shrank, could dangers brave,

Last at His cross and earliest at His grave.'

Sermon, June 2, 2024 (The Second Sunday after Pentecost)

'Though we as Christians are not ‘observing a Sabbath’ when we come together in worship on the first day of the week, the day of the Lord’s resurrection, it is on this day that we remember who we are and whose we are; it is on this day that we receive the good news that God has set us free in Christ, and that the world is passing away that would reduce us to a worker bee, or a consumer, a taxpayer, a voter, something or someone to be used.'

The Holy Communion on the Day of Pentecost, May 19, 2024, 10:30 a.m.

50 days after Easter, the Church observes the festival of the Day of Pentecost, commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the gathered disciples. The Holy Spirit calls, enlightens, sanctifies, and keeps the Church in her pilgrim journey, causing her to grow in faith and holiness until the glorious revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. The color of the day is red, representing the tongues of fire which rested upon the disciples as they spoke in varied tongues of God's deeds of power.

Sermon, April 14, 2024

'In a way, our entire life after baptism can be understood

as ‘leading into the mysteries,’

reflecting upon and claiming by faith

what God has done to us and for us in our baptism.'

The Holy Communion on the Third Sunday of Easter, 10:30 a.m.

Today we hear Luke's account of the risen Jesus' appearance to the disciples. He interprets the Old Testament with reference to his death and resurrection, and commissions them as witnesses to his fulfillment of the Scriptures. Because of the testimony of the apostles, we celebrate today and take our place in the community of the Church which continues to witness to his risen life.

Sermon for Easter Sunday, March 31, 2024

'This day is not only our Victory Day, Liberation Day, Resurrection Day,

but also our Commissioning Day.

It is the day upon which the apostles,

and by extension we whom they baptized and taught,

received their marching orders,

to make this day’s greeting the central theme of life:

Alleluia! Christ is risen! (He is risen indeed! Alleluia!)

And this task is not enslavement but is liberation.'

Sermon for the First Sunday after Christmas, December 31, 2023

'Our readings from Scripture today will not help us

to make more of our time or to recover lost time.

However, they give us a different perspective on time.

And perhaps even they give us a way forward –

for the Scriptures today tell us of time fulfilled.'
